FULLMOON MEDITATIONThe moon has always been an integral part of our lives. Whether it is celebrating a festival or starting an auspicious task, or meditating, we consider the movements of the moon. For example, festivals such as Ramzan, Guru Purnima and Holi are celebrated according to the movements of the moon. It is very good to meditate on a full moon day. The moon has an effect on water and our body contains a lot of water. Hence on the day of Purnima or Full Moon it is beneficial to do meditation.
Food that we consume is converted into 2 parts – mind energy and prana. The mind energy is centered in the pineal gland area from which vital hormones get secreted. The moon enters this gland to take control of all our activities from night till the time we wake up. The rays of the moon affect human beings, animals, plants, water and so on. Our body consists of 70% water. So, the full moon meditation helps the seekers in going inward, transcend the mind, and feel the divinity within. There are many beliefs about the energy of the moon, some of which are disputed by scientific research, but nonetheless are followed by many based on ancient spiritual and astrological text, current astrology, spirituality or just out of intuition that the moon does indeed have an impact on our day to day lives. For those who pay attention to these cycles, the full moon presents an opportunity to reflect on inward changes and support global healing through meditation, while also counteracting some of the negative energy that can become heightened during the 2 days leading up to and following the full moon. To understand the belief system behind the power of the moon, it’s helpful to recognize the strength of the energy/frequency the moon emits. The moon being closer to the earth than the sun has a strong gravitational effect on the planet. One of the main arguments in relation to the full moon’s effects on our emotions and thoughts is that given the fact that our bodies are made up of approximately 75% water, its ability to impact the ocean/tides infers that it may very well have the same subtle affect on us. Although studies have failed to produce any substantiation relating to the moon’s impact on our state of well-being, ironically according to one U.S. survey, about 40% of the general population and 80% of the mental health care professionals believe that the full moon effects human behavior. Many say that during the period around the full moon, there are more suicides, crimes, accidents, psychiatric patient admissions, violence, assaults, drug/alcohol abuse, aggression and even natural disasters. It should not come as a surprise that the Latin word for moon is luna, from which many words such as lunatic and lunacy have originated. Another argument is that the full moon creates an influx of positive ions. An excess of positive ions has a negative impact on health causing more stress, slowed blood flow and less oxygen circulating through the organs and tissues. Conversely, when there are more negative ions, as is the case with the new moon, the body is healthier and more balanced. From the spiritual perspective, the effects on the mind (feelings, emotions and desires) can stem from impressions/thoughts that are taking place at a subconscious level. The full moon is said to heighten the activity of the mind, amplifying conscious thoughts as well as pulling sub-conscious ones to the surface/conscious mind. This can awaken one’s spirituality, making it particularly beneficial to participate in a full moon meditation. Keep in mind that from an astrological perspective, when you were born, the lunar phases and the sign placements can affect each individual differently. This may be the reason why it’s been hard to draw any factual conclusions on the moon’s effect from a scientific perspective, as the personal variances are so vast. For those who do resonate with the energy of the moon, participating in a full moon meditation is one of the best ways to draw upon its magic. Not only is there great healing power in meditation shared with people from all around the world who have joined together to honor this magnificent light source, but by participating in the moon’s cycles of creation (new moon) and completion (full moon), you begin to create a more harmonious life for yourself, others and the planet. The full moon is a great time to release the things in your life that have been negatively impacting you as well as acknowledge what you have achieved and are grateful for since the previous full moon. Meditating during the full moon provides an opportunity to connect deeply with our inner wisdom and with nature. |
